In the online edition of Modena Smart Life 2020, among the different themes identified, the virtual roads "Strade virtuali" (networks and technological infrastructures) hosted on Saturday, September 26th a live streaming entitled Smart City: la sfida verso la sostenibilità per approfondire i risultati del progetto europeo Trafair (Smart City: the challenge towards sustainability to explore the results of the European project Trafair), focused on the understanding of traffic flows and realized in 2 European countries, Italy and Spain. Trafair develops innovative services combining data on air quality, weather forecasts and traffic flows, in order to generate data and information useful both to citizens and Public Administrations. Thanks to the project, the Municipality of Modena has inaugurated a safe and low cost LoraWan network in which various types of sensors exploit this protocol; in the future these sensors can be used for the detection of traffic congestion, road accidents and smart traffic lights, but also for the monitoring of waste bins and overcrowding of public transport.
Lepida's contribution to the project is linked to the regional SensorNet platform, which can acquire data from different sensors in real time and is able to manage the sending of automatic signals in case of detection of critical conditions, and to provide them to third platforms through public APPs. In the case of Trafair, the data provided are related to two air quality control units in Modena, owned by Arpae, and to 24 traffic monitoring units in the province of Modena, owned by the regional road network service.
One of Trafair's objectives is to increase the number of spots in the city where it is possible to measure concentrations of pollutants in the air; in this way it is possible to analyse the concentrations, extremely variable from one place to another within the city. Citizens and companies can view the air quality situation in real time thanks to two APPs, Trafair Green Areas and Trafair Forecast, which will be available on Play Store and IOS. The available measurements are published as open data on the portal of the Emilia-Romagna Region and on the European Data Portal.
