With the month of August, the installation and configuration of the infrastructure that allows to implement Business continuity between the Regional Datacenters of Ferrara and Ravenna, managed by Lepida, were completed. The last step was to connect and configure network and storage devices on two different DCs to activate synchronous data replication at storage level. The operation, opportunely planned, has allowed not to generate any kind of disservice to users.
Business continuity, once thoroughly tested in different scenarios, will allow the entities that provide particularly strategic services to use both computational resources (servers) and disk space, aligned continuously and in real time on the two different Datacenters. If the service applications provide so, it will be possible to have the resource available at the same time in both the Datacenters of Ravenna and Ferrara. Considering that the physical paths of the fiber between the two DCs can reach about 400Km, implementing the Business continuity has been very complex and represents, on these distances, one of the very few experiences in Italy. This technology allows to guarantee a very high availability of the exposed service, as it is also resilient to shutdowns or, in any case, to the unreachability of an entire Datacenter due to any reason .
Business continuity is not and cannot be the only tool used to guarantee the resilience of the services: Backup and Disaster Recovery, in particular, remain necessary tools to safeguard the data and the availability of the service in case of different types of IT incidents, but the new infrastructure will allow to offer a further opportunity for the Institutions that need to increase the availability of the offered services.
