A success case for the territory in the use of MarghERita, the HPC machine of the Emilia-Romagna region made together with Lepida.
After the floods that have affected the Region in May 2023, the Civil Protection, Parma University, Padova University and the Emilia-Romagna Region signed an agreement whereby the computing power of MarghERita has been made available to this large working group, which has been able to implement algorithms to simulate flood hydrograms in real time by applying predictive models of bank breaks of the Lamone River, in order to prevent and mitigate the possible consequences due to flooding of the territory surrounding the watercourse.
This solution has also been successfully used during the weather-hydrological-hydraulical alert that affected the Lamone basin in March 2025.
Thanks to supercomputing and big data, these simulations not only do assist to define actions for the prevention of environmental risks, but they can also help to promptly intervene in the face of the threat of extreme climatic phenomena.
